Mafia Island,hidden paradise of Tanzania!

On 26th September 2022, I embarked on journey to Mafia Island on quest for news report. As it was my first time in the Island, I was awed to find out that the airport was just a stone throw from the beautiful beaches but also close to Mafia Port.

The tiny airport had all the important facilities, and it took us few minutes to locate our luggage and find our way out. I headed straight to Maisara Mafia Lodge, a local owned hotel of which I took refuge for the couple of days I was in Mafia.

After freshening up, I decided to walk around and source the local eating place only to end up at a local bar known as Kosovo (idk if it still operates). Jumbo prawns,Lobsters, squid rings and octopus’ soup, I swear on that evening I ate my soul out to the most delicious seafood platter ever.

The next day ,that being my first morning at the most beautiful ,isolated and cool island of Tanzania I had delicious breakfast of tropical fruits and Tanzania Coffee by the Beach, I can tell you(if I close my eyes right now from the winters of far east where I am while writing this old narrative, I could smell the warmth of the sea and that Coffee).

At Maisara I also enjoyed the quality service from the friendly staff and the environment, being by the beach the facility gives your eyes the amazing sight of the large blue surface and the white sands giving you a better chance to relax and connect with mother nature.

It is worthy to note that Before 2012, the number of flights to Mafia Island were limited and during rainy seasons no aircrafts/small planes would touch down for up to two months due to challenges that faced the airport at that time and only 5 hotels operated in the Island.

But after the upgrade of the Mafia Airport the number of hotels rose to 20 as a direct effect of the airport, (and new projects are going on) also number of visitors to Mafia Island by air increased from 2,000 to 30,000 visitor’s tourists inclusive.

While in mafia I was able to go to Kinasi Hotel, the place of total privacy and a nice hide away place for the most romantic, or private trip that one needs quietness.

The Big Blue Mafia: a diver’s paradise for all the blue excursion and underwater activities.

Kivulini Lodge: the heartwarming place to be with your loved ones, the owners here can keep you busy with the water activities for up to 10 days of blue excursions, of course! with an extra buck. You will enjoy the fresh fruits and juices made to cool down the tropical heat.

Mafia Island Marine Reserve, it is the core of Mafia Island existence. A Job well done by this institute is what mostly drives Mafia Island economy.

Half of the Island is a Marine Reserve Park, the reason why the island is home to lots of fish species and beautiful snorkeling spots all through the seasons.

The marine reserve ensures that the community understand the importance of conservations, restoration, and protection of Coral reefs, plus protection of the Whale sharks.

The island is known to be home of the big blue human friendly mammal known as WHALESHARK. From October to March, it’s a great season to experience a nice swim with the icon of Mafia Island.

While in Mafia one can enjoy several water activities such as Snorkeling, sports fishing, diving, sandbank tours, swimming, swimming with whale sharks, canoeing in the most pristine beach, kite surfing, seafoods, Swahili SPA and massage, coconut products and Swahili culture to name a few.

After my assignments, I headed back to Dar es salaam, but in my heart, I knew I have found a new home, an escape place, and the most serene place ever. Looking forward to going back (oops after a month I went back with bae).

Mafia Island the home of Whaleshark and the hidden paradise of Tanzania!!!!!!
